Division of Computing Studies

Student Laptop Policy

The Division of Computing Studies is working toward requiring laptops for students in our programs. Below, you'll find a link to the current draft of the policy.

In a nutshell, the faculty of Computing Studies feel that an important part of being a computing professional is being proficient at managing your computer and information resources. What better way to learn to do so than with a laptop that can be used to complete an overwhelming majority of Computing Studies classes?

The Division does not plan to require a specific model or brand of laptop, but instead will publish on a yearly basis what we believe is a configuration that will be sufficiently powerful to be useful for the period of time that students normally take to complete the bachelors program. It's our intent that sophomore undergraduate students have a laptop available for use in their Computing Studies classes.

You can view this as a requirement that will be similar to required textbooks for a class. In fact, we are also investigating electronic forms of textbooks for our classes. DCST Laptop Policy document.
