Move-In for Residence Halls and Shared Houses

What Should I Bring to Campus?

The following items are supplied in all residence hall rooms:

• Bed frame and mattress (twin x-long)
• Desk
• Desk Chair
• Dresser
• Window coverings (blinds)
• Shower curtain

The following list represents suggested items to bring with you to campus:

• Sheets and blankets (all beds are twin x-long)
• Pillow(s)
• Towels
• Study lamp (and spare light bulbs)
• Wastebasket
• Throw rug(s)
• Small furniture items (bookcase, file cabinet, etc.)
• Personal emergency preparedness kit (flashlight, water, first-aid materials, batteries, etc.)
• Stereo, iPod, Television, etc.
• Laundry soap
• Laundry basket or hamper
• Computer and ethernet cable
• Alarm clock
• Small appliances (see list of prohibited items before you pack!)
• Decorations to help make your room your home
• Poster putty or similar non-damaging product to hang decorations.
• Transportation (bike, skates, car, etc.)
• Things to talk to your roommate about:
• Larger items (sofa, large televisions, etc.)
• Stereo and TV (you may be able to share one and save space!)
• Decorations
• Ethernet cable (for high-speed internet connection)
• Coax cable for your television
• Telephone
• Cleaning supplies (sponges, paper towels, toilet cleaner, cleaning spray, etc.)

These are things you may NOT bring to campus:

• Pets of any kind
• Firearms and weapons (including, but not limited to: explosives, fireworks, bows & arrows, illegal knives, martial arts weapons, air rifles, paint guns, mace, tear gas, sling shots, and BB guns)
• Alcohol/illegal drugs/paraphernalia
• Halogen lamps
• BBQs
• Hot Plates, toaster ovens, and George Foreman grills (or anything with an open heating element)
• Waterbeds
• Candles, incense, and other open flame objects
• Paint (while we respect the desire for individuality in decorations, all modifications to room must be temporary in nature and may not damage room in any way).
• Multiple-outlet "octopus" plugs (unless they have a self-contained circuit breaker.
• Television satellite dishes.

Move-In Day

Click here to read the booklet, "Protect Your Family From Lead Paint in Your Home" (one of the forms you must sign acknowledges you have been given a copy of this booklet. Since our buildings were constructed before 1978, we must alert you of the possibility of lead paint).

Check in for all Williams Campus Housing residents will be on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 in the Student Union. There will be no proxies allowed for check-in at WCH; the registered Williams Campus Housing student must be present at check-in to receive his/her key. You are welcome to arrive after August 19th, but you must contact our office at (480) 727-1700 to select an alternate check-in date/time. You should have received a letter or e-mail with you appointment time--if you do not have this information, please call our office.

Weather
It will be hot on move-in day! Temperatures are typically well over 100 degrees. In addition, we are in the middle of Monsoon season, so we may have storms (thunderstorms or dust storms) which may impact your move-in experience. Plan ahead...bring lots of water and plan extra time to take breaks in between moving loads of boxes.

Will I be waiting in a long line?
While we are doing our best to plan a fast and efficient check-in experience, there are always unexpected glitches. Please try to be patient--we will do our very best to get you through check-in quickly so you can settle in to your new home.

What can I do to get through check-in FAST?

1. Pay your housing fees before you arrive. Although housing fees are due prior to move-in day, many students do not make this payment, which extends the amount of time it takes to check in (you cannot check in until this payment has been received). Please note: ASU student housing fees are billed directly to the ASU student's account. Non-ASU students pay Williams Campus Housing directly.
2. Download, print, and complete the move-in forms. There will still be a small amount of paperwork to complete in person (parking permit and verifying contact information), but you will not have to sit and complete these forms. This will shorten your check-in experience by approximately 10 minutes.
3. Bring your ASU ID card (non-ASU students can ignore this). If you don't have your ID card yet, be sure to bring your ASU ID number.
4. If you will have a car on campus, bring the following information to check-in with you: License plate number/state, make/model/year/color of car, full name of vehicle's owner.

FAQs

Can I move in early?
No. We are busy cleaning a preparing all rooms for your arrival and cannot accommodate early move-ins.

There was no e-mail address listed for my roommate, how can I contact him/her?
We cannot release personal contact information without your consent. If you do not have contact information for your roommate, wait and see if s/he contacts you. If you would like us to release your telephone number to your roommate because you cannot make contact via e-mail, please contact us at asue@campushousing.com or call (480) 727-1700.

When can I use my meal plan?
Meal Plans (also called Maroom & Gold accounts) will be active on August 19, 2009. Questions regarding the Poly meal plans may be directed to Rick Kollath at (48) 727-1439.

Where do I park my car? How much are parking permits?
Parking in BROWN RESIDENTIAL LOTS is free for residents of Williams Campus Housing (with a permit, available at check-in or in our office). Parking spaces are limited and you are not guaranteed a space.

What if I can't make my assigned move-in appointment time?
You may arrive any time after your scheduled appointment time on August 19th. Please keep in mind that arriving at a time other than your scheduled appointment time may result in a slower check-in process. If you plan to arrive on August 20, 21, 22, or 23, please call our office at (480) 727-1700 to select a NEW appointment time.

What if I don't like my room assignment or roommate?
We cannot accommodate any room change requests until three weeks after opening day (September 4, 2009). After this date, please contact your Hall/Area Coordinator to request a transfer to another available space. Please note that available space is extremely limited and we may not be able to accommodate your request immediately. Also, you will be expected to attempt to resolve any roommate conflicts before you will be considered for a room change.

When is my rent due?
It depends on what you selected for your payment plan: One Payment per Semester or Three Payments per Semester. If you selected One Payment per Semester, your entire semester payment is due on July 25, 2009. If you selected Three Payments per Semester, your payemnts (for Fall 2009) are due July 25th, September 25th, and October 25th. Late charges apply for late payments.

Why is there a $17.95 fee for using a credit card (non-ASU students only)?
This applies only to students who pay Williams Campus Housing directly (non-ASU studnets). We cannot process credit cards in our own office. This fee is charged by the company which processes these payments, Rentpayment.com. In order to avoid this additional fee, pay using a personal check or money order. You may also make arrangements for recurring E-check payments through Rentpayment.com for a fee of only $1 per transaction.

Do I have to move all of my belongings out of my room during winter break? Thanksgiving Break? Spring Break?
No. Although the freshman halls (Talon, Eagle, and Falcon) are closed during the winter break, you may leave your belongings in your room during this time. Please note that you will not have access to your room to obtain anything you may have left behind. If you will not be returning to your room in January, you must completely move out and return your keys by December 18, 2009. Students living in other residence halls and the Shared Houses in South Desert Village are welcome to remain in their rooms during the entire Winter Break. All upperclassmen residence halls and Shared Houses are open during Thanksgiving and Spring breaks.

Who is responsible for cleaning the bathroom/kitchen/living room I share with my suite/pod/house-mates?
You are. Please sit down with the people who share this space and work out a cleaning schedule as soon as you move in. This will help prevent any conflicts later in the year.

I live in a Shared House in South Desert Village...where can I do my laundry?
There is a washer/dryer in each shared house.

I'm a freshman, can I get a single room?
Single rooms are not available for freshmen.

What utilities are included in my rent?
All residence halls include all utilities (water, electricity, cable, internet). Shared houses include water, electricity, cable, internet, and garbage.

What appliances are included in my room/house?

• Eagle/Talon/Falcon rooms: microwave, small fridge
• Phantom, Mustang: small fridge, stove
• Palo Blanco: small fridge
• Shared House: full-size fridge, stove, dishwasher, washer/dryer

How big is my room?
Room sizes vary. Please wait until you move in to purchase specific size items (carpet, curtains, etc.) as we cannot provide this information at this time.

Can I bring a pet? Can my pet visit?
The only pets allowed in residence halls and shared houses are fish in aquariums/bowls 1.5 gallons or smaller in size (one per resident). All other pets are strictly prohibited at all times. Residents found in violation of this policy are subject to a $1,000 fine.

Can I have visitors? Overnight?
You are welcome to invite friends and family to visit you! Please be aware that your guests are expected to abide by all of the ASU and housing policies. If your guests are found in violation of policies, you may be held responsible for their actions. With the permission of your roommate/housemate, guests may stay overnight with you for a maximum of three nights. Guests may be asked to leave if they infringe upon the rights of the roommate/housemate or are found in violation of ASU or housing policies.

May I consume alcohol on campus?
ASU is a dry campus. Alcohol may not be consumed in any residence hall or shared house, regardless of the age of the resident/guest.

Understanding that it is a privilege to live on campus, ASU has set the expectation that students will be active participants in their communities. For the 2008 fall semester, we are soliciting a minimum of 20 community engagement hours per student. 

This is a win-win proposition for students:

• Studies suggest that involved students are higher achievers and are more likely to graduate from college;
• Community engagement is an excellent resume booster;
• Participation in service-oriented projects fulfills scholarship requirements and allows you to give back to your community;
• Involved students will get priority status for housing renewals for the next academic year;
• Being an active community member is FUN and makes the most of your college experience.
