Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand Study Tour

ASU, the Morrison School and Professor Cliff Shultz are pleased to offer a site-study course, the first of its kind, in transitional Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam. This three-hour course, for graduate or undergraduate credit, will be limited to 15 participants. A past year's itinerary is presented below to give you a feel for learning and cultural activities you will enjoy.
The January 2006 schedule is under development and will be posted once it becomes finalized:
| January 1 |
- Depart Phoenix. |
| January 3-7 |
- The group will arrive in Bangkok, Thailand. Learning activities will include the several business and cultural tours. |
| January 8-10 |
- Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is the group's next stop. Here students will enjoy and learn from a day-long seminar and a variety of historical, cultural, and business tours. |
| January 11-12 |
- Phan Thiet is the next site of exploration for our work study tour. The group will benefit from cultural tours and the services marketing experience. |
| January 12 |
- The team will return to Ho Chi Minh City on the 12th, overnight, followed by travel to our next Southeast Asian country, Cambodia. |
| January 13-14 |
- Siem Reap, Cambodia has myriad cultural sites, which the group will visit, in addition to viewing an interesting services marketing presentation. A special highlight of the trip will be a visit to the famous Angkor temples and NGOs that are refurbishing Cambodia's textile sector. |
| January 14 |
- Students will travel today to Bangkok and prepare for their final departure back to the US. |
| January 15 |
- The formal study tour ends today and students may depart for their return trip today. Members of the study group eager to explore more of Southeast Asia may extend their stay (via initial purchase of an open-ended ticket). (Schedule subject to change.) |
The course is officially listed as an agribusiness course, but general business and liberal arts students may also receive credit for this course in their programs. Prior to departure, students will congregate for a cumulative 6 + hour series of preparatory meetings. The briefing sessions will serve as an introduction to country background and current events and to course goals and content. Highlights: Activities will include visits to government offices, production sites (e.g., firms, factories, fisheries), banks (Citibank), consulting firms (Data consult), law firms (e.g., Russian & Vecchi), marketing firms (e.g., Heineken, P&G, PepsiCo, local firms), eco-tourism destinations, participation in ICMD-8, etc. Other activities include tours to Cu Chi Tunnels, etc. We will have a city tour with cultural highlights and a visit to Mui Nghe.
Siem Reap, Cambodia
Highlights: Siem Reap is a small town just north of Southeast Asia's largest lake, Tonle Sap. Here we will have a city tour with cultural highlights. We will also visit the nearby Angkor temple ruins, stone monuments built mainly between the 9th and 13th centuries by the Khmer (the ancient name for Cambodia) kings, who made Angkor their capital. The UNESCO world heritage site, Angkor Wat, is the most well known and best preserved of the Khmer ruins.
